Honey Extractor Rental Program
WVFMA’s Honey Extractor Rental Program, developed in partnership with the Mountaineer Beekeepers Association, will provide beekeepers across West Virginia with free access to honey harvesting equipment. The statewide program is designed to reduce equipment barriers for small-scale and beginning beekeepers while supporting local honey production and value-added agricultural opportunities.
The program is currently in the planning and development phase. Additional information about rental locations, scheduling, and program requirements will be announced as the statewide system is finalized.
Program Availability
The program will include 15 honey extractor kits available for short-term rental throughout West Virginia:
- 14 honey extractor kits will be distributed throughout the state’s conservation districts to provide equitable access for producers.
- 1 surge/replacement unit will be maintained to help ensure equipment availability when another unit requires repair or when additional equipment is needed in an area.
WVFMA will manage scheduling, logistics, and rental coordination on behalf of the Mountaineer Beekeepers Association.
Honey Extractor Equipment
Each honey extractor rental kit will include essential equipment for harvesting and processing honey, including:
- Honey extractor
- Uncapping tank
- Honey bucket with gate and lid
- Uncapping knife
- Wax capping scraper
- Two stainless steel filters
- Tube of food-grade bearing grease
The rental inventory will include stainless steel manual honey extractors with equipment suitable for multiple frame capacities.
What You’ll Need
To use the equipment, renters will be expected to provide:
- Access to electrical power, as required by the specific extractor
- Access to running water
- Adequate workspace for equipment operation
- Honey harvesting and handling supplies
- Food-safe cleaning and sanitation supplies
All equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before being returned.
Rental Information
Maximum Rental Length:
- Up to 3 Days: The standard rental period will be up to three days.
- Additional scheduling flexibility may be available based on equipment demand and availability.
Free Equipment Rental:
- $0 Rental Fee: Honey extractor equipment will be available to eligible West Virginia beekeepers at no cost.
The program is designed to reduce the financial barrier of purchasing specialized honey extraction equipment and increase access to resources for small-scale and beginning beekeepers throughout West Virginia.

Important Information for Beekeepers:
Participants may be responsible for complying with applicable state and local regulations related to beekeeping and honey sales, including:
- Apiary registration requirements through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture
- Applicable cottage food and honey sales regulations
- Proper food handling practices
- Appropriate honey labeling requirements
Beekeepers are responsible for understanding and complying with applicable regulations. Additional rental guidelines and program policies will be released as the statewide system is finalized.

The Honey Extractor Rental Program represents a collaborative effort between the West Virginia Farmers Market Association and the Mountaineer Beekeepers Association to strengthen West Virginia agriculture through shared resources and partnerships.
By helping beekeepers access professional extraction equipment without the large upfront investment, the program will create new opportunities for agricultural producers while supporting pollinator education, local food systems, and economic growth throughout West Virginia.
